The web 2.0 tool that I chose is called Ekoloko, which is described as “…an educational, virtual community where kids discover the world, virtual and real, through fun games and quests, while absorbing the values, knowledge and skills that will help them become more responsible and involved individuals”on the Web 2.0 link given us by FSO. Children who go on this site can go with their parents and create their username and password.
When I used this site, I bypassed the registration and decided to play where I created an avatar-like character. I know that kids would enjoy making the avatar. Any site that allows children to learn eco-friendly things while having fun is a good site to use. As global warming becomes more into the mainstream news, it is imperative for younger children to become eco-friendly. I liked this site for that purpose. The music on this site can easily engage a younger child and it seemed enjoyable for anyone.
I would use this web tool in my classroom (once I have one) as a way to educate my students about the earth, global warming, and about what it means to go ‘green’. I would allow each child time to create an avatar and then allow playtime with this site. I would then have the children write about what they are learning on the site and about what they feel going ‘green’ means. I would have them also write about what they and their families can do to be more eco-friendly at home. I can incorporate the children’s writings into a blog that can be shared with other classes or schools.
